EZ Combs™ Review: You had me at hello
On the last day of 2008 I ran across a commercial for EZ Combs™ and promptly fell in love. How could it be that I’ve never seen a product such as this, I wondered.
As you may have guessed, I’m a chick with long hair and I always wear it in a ponytail. See that drawing up there to the left? That’s me and my bitchin’ ponytail. In real life my hair curls up like that in the back. It’s cute, isn’t it? Damn straight it’s cute.
Anyway, it’s my trademarked look and it serves me well. But every so often I like to shake it up and stray from the utilitarian style of the ponytail. Enter the waterfall. It works with all of your hair up and it also works with just half of your hair up. It’s versatile, that waterfall. It’s also how Sarah Palin wears her hair most of the time.
And it’s sassy. But if you try that with a claw comb it doesn’t allow you to recline comfortably. It’s like having a stapler stuck to the back of your head. Not comfortable. So when I saw that EZ Combs™ can produce that look with a smooth, flat comb I was overjoyed. That is the exact moment I fell in love.
So I wrote about my initial brush with the EZ Combs™ in this previous post and the powers that be contacted me. And the joy that is the EZ Comb arrived on Friday last week. But I wanted to take the weekend to perform my rigorous testing before I reported back to you.
And here is what I’ve discovered.
It takes some time to get used to how this comb works. I still have to think when I put it in.
It’s sort of difficult to explain how to do it, but the first side goes in so the round part of the comb is resting on your scalp. Then as you pull it across have have to flip that second come under the beads so the other comb will rest with the rounded part against your scalp. As I said, I have to consciously think about that as I put it in. But I’m getting the hang of it.
The actual comb section is made of flexible wire, thinner than a bobby pin and much more flexible. The ends of the comb are fashioned in a U shape so they don’t scratch your scalp as you insert them into your hair. That’s nice.
If they bend after you’ve worn it for a while, it’s easy to re-shape them back into place. The “ten durable bungees” that hold the beads and the two combs together are made of clear elastic cords. I’m a bit concerned that my beautiful bungees will strain under the bulk of my hair, but so far so good. They do seem to be quite durable.
So I can produce the half waterfall, thusly.
The commercial usually shows the clip twisted which creates a butterfly look, as if there are triangular-shaped wings on each side. But when my OCD kicks in I like all of the beads showing in a uniform pattern, so I wear it flat.
As you may have noticed in the initial photos, I also have the Caramel Bronze EZ comb. I do like that color and enjoy that one as well, but I’ve used the Dazzling Silver comb in these photos so there’s enough contrast between the comb and my hair.
I must admit, the brown comb is tighter than the white comb and it tends to hurt my head after a while. I think I need to use that one in my exercise look so the bungees will stretch a bit. You can also see that difference in the photo of both of them up there.
When working with the full cascading waterfall, I find my hair is not an even length so I have a section that’s longer than the rest. For some reason it always ends up on the left side. I don’t know how or why that happens because when it’s all down it’s basically the same length. But that’s no longer a problem with the EZ Combs™.
Those stretchy bungees allow me to tuck that section inside, under the beads and then I have the same length all around. That’s very nice. With the claw clip I had to keep readjusting or use bobby pins.
But sometimes I just go with that wild and woolly look because I’m that kinda crazy. For your perusal, my wild woolly look is on the left.
Other times I am uptight and my hair reflects that. I use the style on the right when I work out. I don’t need my hair going nuts on me at the YMCA. I have also tested the EZ Combs™ while reclining in the sauna. Two thumbs up, baby.
I give these combs 4.5 Cardio Stomps out of 5. Why was half a Stomp deducted?
Nobody’s perfect and I’m still concerned about the durable bungees. Time will tell on the bungee issue. And I still need to stretch the brown one out. As I said earlier, it’s much tighter than the white one and it does bother my scalp after four or five hours of wearing it.
Lastly I need to get used to the mechanics of adjusting the combs. The further apart they are in your hair, the tighter the hold. So obviously, the closer together they are, the looser the hold. I think once I get used to that, the brown one will become as comfortable as the white one.
Bottom line, I think the EZ Combs™ are more than worth the price and they delivered full satisfaction. I think my ponytail may never be the same.

good morning cg! glad you love your ez combs girlfriend. dare i say it, i do hope the bungee part holds up under your workout hairstyle. i always get a little concerned with rubber and elastic, they just seem to snap or pop when you need them the most.
enjoy them!
Morning chica! So far the bungees are doing well, but I wonder the same thing. And I am thoroughly enjoying them — even as I type!
[...] I did receive the combs less than two weeks later. You can read my EZ Combs™ review here, but I’ll tell you right now that I truly love [...]
I am sorry CG but I have to say I looked at your pictures before reading and I thought does Palin’s hair look like that ? Does she use an EZ Comb ? And then I had a cup of Coffee and I read your article and I wonder Who took the pictures ?
Happy monday to you.
Hiya Frank. Sarah Palin’s hair does look like that. Um, you may notice that her hair, in the first set of pictures, is nice and smooth, whereas mine is sorta … fuzzy. I do my best.
I don’t believe she uses an EZ Comb, but I can’t be sure of that.
My husband, Mr. C, was the photographer on this particular photo shoot.
I don’t have long hair, so not to be rude or anything, I really got a lot of info about the combs that I don’t need. It was a nice story, though.
But I do have to say that the back of your ears are lovely. Really. And it’s a nice shot of you–like if I was working out (yeah, right) on the treadmill behind you at the gym. If I was there, then I would identify you as CG and I’d be all like “Aha! I know who you are, Cardiogirl!” kinda like I just found out who Batman or Superman really is. So it’s kinda like the E-Z Combs are your superhero costume. Wow.
Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. Maybe I can put a barrette in my hair and be the “Robin” to your “Batman”???
Hey, I thought you were a hairstylist. Can’t you recommend this to some of your long-haired clients? Well, I am glad you enjoyed my story anyway :) Thanks for admiring my ears.
And I did secretly wonder if anyone from my particular Y would read this and then notice me on the elliptical. And I just have to say, if anyone at my Y walked up to me and said, “Cardiogirl?” I would seriously lose my shit.
I am like Batman, baby. And if I’m unmasked (locally) I’ll freak out. Yeah, I’ll take you as my Robin and you don’t even have to wear a barrette. Just add some highlights to your hair and we’ll be good.
I am sold!! I too have long, super thick hair and almost always wear it up. I have been wanting to shake things up a bit. I am concerned that I just won’t be coordinated enough to put them in. I am willing to give it a try though.
BTW– Your hair is really beautiful. I love the natural curl.
Oh Michelle! Thank you. Aren’t they fun! It does take some practice putting them in, but you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.
You do have really lovely hair, CG. I love how thick it is, and the curl is beautiful. This from the girl who’s got stick-straight, baby fine hair. Ugh. There isn’t much I can do with it. In fact, I’m not sure these EZ Combs would work for me if I had hair long enough to use them because hardly anything stays in my hair. Everything just slides out because my hair is so fine. There’s nothing for the barrette or comb to grab on to. It makes me sad because I have no idea what to do with my hair, especially when it’s long, and these combs look like an excellent solution. I’m so glad you like them!
Again, thank you blue, you’re so kind.
They say it works on all hair types, but like you, I’m not so sure on the super fine stuff… The only thing I can think of for really fine hair are those super small actual rubber, rubber bands. I use those on Emily and then just snip the rubber band when I want to take it out. You get about 500 in each pack so they’re economical.
Wow, you’re all sparkly!!
They look good. NOW, you’ll be able to beat that ol’ lady on the illiptical whoza-whatzit thingy.
Aren’t they super sparkly?! I think I will beat old Muriel. I did a full 60 minutes the last time I went to the Y *and* I was wearing my EZ Combs.
First things first, I gotta get the Tweeze. I checked it out on Amazon CG, and I tell you girl you’ve got sales skills to boot! Some how Converse needs to be notified. And yes you’ve been blessed my dear with some gorgeous hair and I’m a hair stylist too ( I know what I’m talking about) Hmmm…. those combs could be very nice for prom and whatnot….
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Tweeze! But you already knew that. I wish Converse would send me new shoes to try. But I am afraid they’re going to shut down my dog and pony show by telling me I am using their photos in an unauthorized manner. So shhh!
Thanks of the follicular kudos! I always thought it was just wild and woolly. I’ll have to change that to mah-velous (remember that character Billy Crystal played on SNL? Please tell me you’re not too young to remember that Heather.)
They definitely create a nice updo, I imagine they would be great for proms and weddings.
I never knew infomercial stuff actually (kind of?) worked. The durability of such items is always my question.
I’ve had the same thoughts, Heidi, but my dad has bought a lot of stuff from infomercials and he’s been happy with everything he’s gotten so far. Now I personally draw the line at the Snuggie — that blanket with the arm holes.
My wife is always obsessing over our pre-teen daughter’s hair. This is just the thing to bring them some more mother-daughter bonding.
You could tell that was sarcastic, couldn’t you?
Anyway, nice review. I might get them for my daughter, but I’ll make sure she hides them from her mom. ;)
I thought you were being serious SPG. It might bring some love to the crib. Well, it could happen.
Oooo, I may need to get one someday. Like you, the ponytail and I have become One. Although here it’s too hot to wear it down much…
I love the idea of being One with my ponytail. I might have to start using that as a mantra when my mojo is being annoyed and irritated.
This post has me thinking of an excellent G.K. Chesterton book called “The Man Who Was Thursday.” It tells the tale of a man invited to join a group of policemen chasing anarchists. There are seven of them, but one has just stepped down (died?) and needs to be replaced. The head of the group is an individual identified as Sunday. No one in the group ever sees Sunday’s face clearly – often it is just peripheral views or a darkened room. Their final question comes down to “Who is Sunday and what does He want?”
We’ve seen the back of your head, CG. We cannot see your face. We cannot fully know you. But we will happily continue to grapple with what we do know of you (even while coveting your thick, curly E-Z combed hair).
I might have to read that book, Wendy. The title sounds very familiar — was it made into a movie in the 40s? Anyway, I like that idea of “Who is Cardiogirl and what does she want?”
I’m a simple gal who wants free Converse low tops for life. Oh and a ponytail every day, rain or shine.
I am suffering from serious hair-envy! You have lovely shiny lustrous hair. My hair was long, but I just had it cut to medium length and am still adjusting. Sigh.
My mental picture of you keeps developing. guess you want to remain anonymous, but Michigan-gym-types will be suspiciously eyeing off the backs of heads to try and identify you now!
Wow, really jeanette? Gosh I’m looking at this hot mess of hair in a totally different way now!
I fear if you saw my face you would be sorely disappointed, although there’s more of a sneak peek on my about page. I did a self portrait last year so you could see my awesome specs. That might fill in a few blanks, or make you really frustrated since it’s not the whole thing and doesn’t offer much in the way of completing the overall picture.
Maybe if you twist the EZ Comb twice, you will get the butterfly effect and also have all the stones showing on their sparkly side. Not that I would know because my hair is as flat as it comes. No amount of product + EZ Comb could get this effect for me.
You’re right Heather, that’s exactly how to get that butterfly look, but I like to rebel against basic convention, plus I do like the look of it flat. However, I think the hold is tighter when you butterfly it. Maybe I’ll do the butterfly when I’m exercising.
I can’t believe how excited I am at seeing the back of your head! :D
You have very lovely hair, with a pretty wave and a beautiful colour.
Thanks, Cate, you’re so good to me! Isn’t that funny? I’ve been thinking about revealing my face, but I just don’t know. I think the final reveal wouldn’t be that thrilling. The back of my head really is my best side :)
Okay, Cate just said both the same things I was going to say.
So yeah, what she said. :)
I like that you two are on the same wave. That’s fun!
I’m glad I found your site because I’ve been contemplating getting the EZ Combs. Either that or cutting my hair. Thanks so much for the info about them.
Also, re the Snuggie: I wish I’d had one to give my Mom when she was alive and in a wheelchair. It would have been perfect. She had a leg amputated and was in a nursing home. People who are in a wheelchair and have to rely on others would appreciate it, whereas people who can get in and out of a wheelchair on their own might not like it so much. As for me, not so much.
No, no Older than dirt! Don’t cut your hair. Or if you do, keep it long enough to put it up :) I just trimmed about three inches off and I found that the brown comb doesn’t bother me now. I think the weight of my hair was contributing to that.
I suppose the Snuggie has its uses, like you mentioned. Every time I see it, though, they folks wearing it make me think of druids with the big old cloaks with hoods.
I really want to know how these hold up, esp. for workouts. I get a freaking headache/neckache due to my heavy hair. I too break everything I put in my hair… or my hair breaks it. My hair is too healthy to keep stuff from falling out unless you keep it tight enough to give you a headache but looking at this makes me wonder if the pressure will be spread out a little more and at least keep my hair out of my face.
I am not about to braid or french braid my hair every time I go to the gym and end up with pleats just after doing yoga. No need to wash but I don’t want my hair looking like it was just braided! Yet I don’t know what else to do right now besides this. Grr. I hate the thought of spending $24 or however much it is for all 4. I don’t even dye my hair or pay hairdressers, so why would I pay for something so high priced if it will break? Oh, I wish I knew sooner how these will hold up in a couple of months use.
That is a question I have as well. I’ve only been using them for about a week or so and so far so good. But I still wonder about those bungees. They seem pretty thin, but they’ve been doing the job. Again for about 10 days. I will say I just cut my hair, about three inches off, and the pain I had in the back when using the brown one has gone away.
So I wonder if that was due to the length and how heavy it was. It could also be that I am getting used to adjusting the combs. I guess only time will tell.
You can get 4 EZ Combs (black, silver, brown & wood) at this website (http://www.taylorgifts.com/prodetail~itemNo~29564.asp) for about the same price as buying from the EZ Combs website.
I’m surprised another site is selling them, I wonder if it’s the same maker. I’ll have to go check that out.
Back now. It looked like two combs cost $10 over there. Regardless, I submitted a review since I love them so much!
That’s so awesome that they sent you some. Thanks for taking the time to write such a great description and take the pictures for us!
It was, and continues to be, awesome Jessi! I do love them and not just because they were sent gratis. Although that part didn’t hurt.
I, like you, have extremely thick heavy hair that I wear in a ponytail most of the time, though not the lovely curls. I happened across this site because I was looking for a review on Ez Combs and I think your endorsement has convinced me to try them. I understand your concern about the bungies stretching out over time though. You look like you have some other interesting stuff on your site so I am going to bookmark it and come back as soon as I go get some ez combs.
Hiya Dana! Thanks for stopping by and checking things out. So far I’ve been happy with the combs — I do have my eye on those bungees, though.
[...] used the EZ Combs: You can check out this full product review at the Cardiogirl website here: EZ Comb Full Review. You can also view what other EZ Comb users had to say here: EZ Combs at Taylor [...]
Wanted to say that when I first saw the ez-combs on tv i was excited but skeptical. your post help me decide to order and give them a try – I too have thick, but curly hair and am always looking for a new style. These might do the trick. Thanks for the review!
Hi Donna! I’ll be interested to hear how they work out for you. So far so good. Thanks for stopping by!
I will say that I, too, was caught up by the infomercial and have since started my research before buying this product. From the sounds of the commercial it sounds like a good deal – - – - $10 + $6.99 for 3 combs. However ! Upon reading their website it’s actually more costly thank $16.99 as they charge an ADDITIONAL $6.99 as “separate shipping and handling” for the black combs and the DVD…so what we’re really looking at cost wise is $23.98 which has stopped me from whipping out my credit card to buy buy buy. I’m half tempted to try to make these on my own so I can really customize the hair candy and save money all at the same time. :-)
Someone left a comment saying she bought them at Walgreen’s in the “As Seen on TV” section. I haven’t checked there myself, but that’s how I usually prefer to buy stuff. At a store rather than through the mail. Good luck Liz!
Thanks for the review. I have waist-length, very thick hair, which I usually wear in a ponytail. I wanted to try them, but was afraid of spending the money. After your endorsement, I know I will buy them.
thanks!
Hiya Peggie! It is a gamble, isn’t it? I hope you enjoy yours as much as I am enjoying mine. If you get a chance I’d like to hear what you think of them and how they work for your length of hair. Mine isn’t nearly as long and I’ve wondered how they would hold up with such a long hair.
I came here because I’m thinking about buying these for my own exceedingly thick hair. Your post makes me want to get them, but I’m still wondering… do those little beads get tangled in your hair?
I do have to be careful with those beads. I would say every fourth time I use them I have to wrangle the beads out. So maybe 25-40% of the time I have to work with the tangles. But I still don’t think that should prevent you from giving it a try. You just have to be conscious of the beads when removing it from your hair. Also, I would recommend buying them from Walgreens, not online or via phone.
Just to let everyone know these double comb hair accessories can be found all over the web for very different prices. I found a pack of five on ebay for $19.00. They were all different colors. You can also look at African butterfly, while they are more expensive they work better on certain types of hair and you can find some more intricate and sexier designs. Just a heads up.
Alex
Thanks for the tip Alex! I might have to check out those different designs.
[...] the first day of this fine year I discovered the joy that is EZ Combs. After some creative wrangling I was able to secure two such combs. I still love the combs and I am getting better at putting them in. Initially I had a headache after [...]
I am really really interested to try these now. I’m going to be in my dad’s wedding next month so I wanted to see if I could use these in my hair…
I would love to know how they’re treating you now after a couple of months of use. How are those bungees?
Go for it, Kim! They’re sold at Walgreen’s so you can avoid the wait and shipping fees. I still love them and think they create really nice updos especially for a wedding. (Chants “Do it! Do it!”)
omg i love these!!! i just recently got my hair cut and im adjusting, but i hate (reallly HATE) my hair in my face. my mom (dude i’m 13) bought these at walgreens 4 10bucks… today is easter, i was in a mood and needed my hair outta my face… it was really easy… my hair is still in place from like 8 oclock… short hair long hair it dont matter… it gets the hair outta your face!!!! :))
It sounds like these combs are really working out for you, glad to hear it! Had to laugh when you said “(dude i’m 13)….”
I do believe you are my youngest (known) commenter.
Gee…what happened to my story that was posted briefly last night about how EZ Comb is trying to get $44 from me for merchandise I understood from their commercial to be more like $19? It disappeared! I’m still contesting this rip off and urge everyone to stay away from mail orders of this product.
It’s on the other post called “EZ Combs I think I love you.” Here’s the link to the post, your comment is currently the last one.

I actually wrote two posts about EZ Combs. The first, called “EZ Combs I think I love you” is where you left your comment from last night. I did reply to your comment. Click the link to see it.
The second post I wrote is this one you’re reading, called “EZ Combs™ Review: You had me at hello.” Sorry for the confusion.
Good luck on getting your refund and if you’re not too jaded you can buy them for $10 at Walgreen’s thereby avoiding the shipping fee. And if you don’t like them you can return them to the store with your receipt.
Thank you for letting me know and for acknowledging the shipping problems this company has. And yes, I am FAR too displeased to try to buy that product in any way by now.
You’re welcome. It’s unfortunate things went so badly. I usually prefer to buy stuff in a store where I can talk to a person and return the item with a receipt if I’m not happy with the product.
It seems so many people have had the same experience you’ve had with ordering over the phone or online. That’s a bummer.
Hey there,
Just read your EZ Comb post. I have a set of EZ Combs in Black and Sahara Sandalwood that I bought at my local Walgreen’s for 9.99 ( no shipping, :o) ). I absolutely love them!
I have thick, curly hair, I wear them everyday. Eventually (when I have a spare $9.99 ($10.59 with tax), I will go back to Walgreen’s to get the silver/caramel set.
So let everyone know (if they don’t already), that Walgreen’s carries the EZ Combs in two different color sets. Just walk in, get the EZ Combs, pay and walk out. No shipping, no problems!
Hi Adrienne!
Yes ma’am, that’s my recommendation — to buy them from Walgreen’s for the reasons you mentioned. I’m glad they’re working out for you. I still enjoy mine, also.

This woman evidently works for “Not-So’EZ comb.” She has contacted me and purports to be looking into why I’m still being billed over $20 after returning my order for which, again, I was billed over twice what the TV claimed. This has been going on for days. How tough can my claim be?
That’s interesting that there’s now a company devoted to getting your money back. I wish you well.
I actually found my EZ Combs at Walgreen’s. I was looking for a toy for my dog when I ran across the combs. I bought a set with Black and Sahara Sandalwood for $9.99 plus tax ($10.59 out the door). No shipping, no problems. I love my EZ Combs!
Yup, I’ve seen them there as well. Glad they’re working out for you!
Hi Cardiogirl. I very much doubt the company is “devoted to getting my money back.” Or I’d have my money back.
Buyers beware of ordering EZ Comb over the phone!!
What a bummer. Aren’t you working with that other company — Not so EZ Combs, though? Regardless it’s still a drag. I’m sorry to hear that.
My credit card co. is going to bat for me, which I appreciate. I still have not heard back from Diane Fisher. Stay tuned…and
DO NOT ORDER EZ COMB BY PHONE!!
It seems like you have a much better chance of a refund now that your credit card company is behind you. Am I right in thinking you never even received the combs? And they charged you way more than you expected for stuff you didn’t buy and receive, either? That’s bogus.
I received two boxes I never opened and a $44 bill. I returned the boxes the next day, unopened. I’d been told by a co. rep. I’d be refunded in full…not so. After several calls to the company, a supervisor agreed to credit my acct. half, and did; the rest she claimed was for postage. It cost me $3.04 to mail back the boxes from my address to the co. So I still owe over $20 and I have no merchandise, which the commercial for led me to believe I’d be billed around $20, max. Bogus, indeed.
I wonder if your credit card company will be able to get that last $20 back. It is such a rip off that their “shipping and handling fee” is six times what you paid. Not right.
Hi cardiogirl… it’s been some time.. what’s the latest with these combs? Still ok, or busted by now… or what? Would love to hear a many month review!
Howdy Curious! Still going strong. Although, believe it or not, I consider the EZ Comb a more stylish ‘do and I only use them on Sundays at church. I know, that’s queer, but it’s the reason behind how I use them. The other days of the week I use a big old barrette for my ponytail.
Two of the bungees have broken on the brown one. While still usable, I’m not confident in its ability to hold my hair. So when I use that one (sparingly, by the way) I always carry a rubber band with me just in case.
The white one is still intact and I still have confidence in that one.
I bought mine around the same time most people did. I have short hair and they work wonders!! So much so that I went back and bought all of the colors and probably about to buy more of brown. Ebay has them as well starting off at .99 (I think a five dollar shipping fee) and they come in any color you can think of.
Aren’t they great?! I’m so glad yours are working out. I didn’t realize they were so inexpensive on Ebay — thanks for the heads up!
I have really think short hair, well it’s about to my shoulder but I still really want them but do you think the would work for my hair???
