The Gloaming

Last week Lanita from A Mother’s Hood wrote a post called The Trouble with Titles. The post is about her preferred method of writing: she comes up with the title first and then writes the post.

But sometimes she can’t remember what she was thinking when she wrote the title. And that’s when I decided I was going to write a post using one of her titles. Enter the Gloaming.

I don’t know what the Gloaming means but I’m guessing it’s a sense of foreboding. Just this morning I experienced the Gloaming when I fired up the coffee maker. We buy three-pound containers of coffee from Costco. We usually have one that’s open and a spare on the baker’s rack.

While I was scooping some out I realized we were at the halfway mark so I scanned the rack to make sure we had another one. Couldn’t find it, panic ensued. I know, there was no chance that I’d run out of coffee today. But I was really bummed out that we didn’t have a back up. This round went to the Gloaming.

Then, as I picked up the half-gallon container of half-and-half, my anxiety level rose yet again. The container was too light! There was barely enough for my cup of coffee much less Mr. C’s. Down I went to the basement refrigerator to see if there was one more container.

The dread mounted as I silently chanted, “Let there be one more; let there be one more.” The Gloaming was tap dancing on my back as I opened the fridge. And success!

Cardiogirl 1; the Gloaming 1.

And as I trod back up the steps to the kitchen there was one more treat for me this Monday morning. I realized the spare can of coffee was sitting on the floor next to the baker’s rack. We do have a spare; the Gloaming is my bitch!

Brava! Brava! Gloaming is actually another word for twilight or dusk. It’s always better to use a $50 word than a $3.99 word. A synonym for gloaming is blackness, so I can see that using the word gloaming is appropriate when discussing your morning coffee. I would see black if I had ran out of coffee this morning.

Technically, isn’t it 2:0? As you had the coffee in the first instance? :D

The gloaming is also called twilight (insert sparkly vampire joke here). Animals that are active at those times are called “crepuscular”, which I think is a lovely word.

The word “gloaming” makes me smile and think of scenes from the Musical “Brigadoon.” I once saw an amateur theatre company present “Brigadoon” in West London and the main male character split his pants during the performance. It was … memorable. If you haven’t seen “Brigadoon,” and enjoy musicals, I highly recommend it.

That is a lot of anxiety over creamer. I use milk. And if I run out then I use the evaporated milk I keep in the pantry. Okay, or Bailey’s. But only on the weekends! Mostly. The Jack is definitely for the weekends.

Phew! I just went and checked and I have plenty of almond milk for my coffee tomorrow. You had me worried but we are both winning!

  • You rock Cardio Girl! Gloaming IS your bitch! And, it’s nice to know I am not the only one that also always needs to have back-up supplies on hand!

  • Rachele says:

I learned a whole bunch here. Gloaming is a good word and glad the definition was given. crepuscular? Holy smokes. Never heard of it. Never good to be without backup coffee. I use non-dairy creamer and milk as a back up. I never need the milk… unless we’re out of that too. Just the way it seems to work around here.

  • I have ‘Roamin’ in the gloaming’ in my head now. I have no idea what it is, though I think it may be a very old song. We have a back-up of everything in our house, sometime three or four of some things. Mo does NOT like to run out.

I know that intense feeling of gloaming when you check your stash, wondering, hoping, praying even, that there is one more box, bottle, can, or whatever in your fridge, pantry, etc. It’s rare, but it does happen.

But you are definitely still “winning”!

  • So it sounds like you’ve got another day, but don’t wait too long. You’ll obviously be needing to get to the store within the next 36 hours. 48 tops.

  • I am currently out of my posh coffee. I had to drink the stuff I used to drink this morning and it nearly gagged me. I’ve been out of my coffee since yesterday. Since it’s very expensive I won’t let Alex have any of it. It’s all mine. Therefore when I’m out, he gives me a little shrug that says “your problem”. I’m waiting for the Fed Ex truck right now. If they would come soon, it would make me happy. I have a caffeine lacking headache. I’m angry and need my fix. And this is a gloaming situation if there ever was one.

All I could think of when I saw the word “gloaming” was the movie “Gleaming The Cube” starring my junior high crush, Christian Slater:) I write my posts backwards…come up with an idea and then struggle to think of a funny title. Maybe I should do it the other way around and see what happens.

  • If a word is so old and out of use that one must google its meaning then perhaps it deserves a new one. Since it’s kind of between ‘glom’ and ‘glow’, I submit that the new meaning of gloaming should be the act of basking in your partner’s afterglow.

    To use it in a sentence;
So warming was her afterglow, and so tired was I making it so, I hadn’t the energy to do more than lie there gloaming beside her.

I think Christopher Reeve was in a movie that had Gloaming in the title. It sounds so meaty to me.

I get very anxious when I think we’re running out of things. Which is why we have about 14 cans of different kinds of beans in my cupboard and pantry. Plus several bags of dried beans.

We don’t eat that many beans.

i think there was some movie with the title the gloaming and i too have always thought it was a dark word meaning a bad sign. i think we think of gloom. but i am not a fan of twilight, so that is gloom, as far as i am concerned. but i hate that this word runs around in my head sometimes because i don’t know where i first heard it.

i too usually create the post title and then write the post. and sometimes have to steer myself back. and sometimes wonder why on earth i chose that title.

but i get most annoyed when i write a very entertaining post in my head while i am driving and then when i go to type, not only can i not think of the clever and entertaining words i had going in my head, i can’t even remember what i was going to write. just one more reason i am certain i need a chauffeur so i can do things like type while i am going somewhere.

I always try to get clever and pull something from the middle of the post that will make sense once the reader is finished with the article. But other times I rely on a standard feature like The book of questions. Those are the easy posts.
