My kids are 10, 8 and 6. They are each required to do a thorough clean of their 2 bedrooms and the 'lounge' room (junkroom) once a week, as part of their 'Saturday jobs' . This includes under the bed/drawers, in the cupboard etc. Any small thing will be vacuumed up - they know I MEAN it! Otherwise the general rule for our apartment is:

If I can't walk through the room without stepping over and around stuff it's too messy and must be tidied pronto.

If they play an involved game with lots of bits, they must work together to tidy it, whatever day it happens to be.

Saturday Jobs earn pocket money (only $2.50, we're overseas students ) and are 4 or 5 negotiated things, which are actually helpful to ME. eg dusting the tv and computer, emptying bins and recycling, helping fold laundry and doing the great sock sort'find'n'match; doing dishes etc.

Yep it took training, but I figure that the kids need to know how to clean up after themselves as a developmental thing, and we ALL make mess so we ALL need to take a little responsibility. Little jobs during the week are required in order to earn computer time too.

(btw I HATE housework, so any assistance from the family is profusely thanked and appreciated)

It seems it always boils down to the training and repeated exposure to cleaning. Ugh, nothing is ever easy.
