The book of questions, Volume 69

Hi, you’re still dealing with Robo-Cardiogirl but like the Terminator, I’ll be bahh-ck, alive and kicking on Monday.

Friday is The Book of Questions Day around these parts.

Today’s question comes from the aptly titled book “The Book of Questions” by Gregory Stock, Ph.D.

And here it is, Question 199.

You are given $1,000,000 to donate anonymously to charity or to a stranger. How would you dispose of it?

This would be fun, wouldn’t it? First I’m going to add a bit more variety. You can choose multiple charities and people, but you’re still anonymous. Because what fun is giving it all to one place or person? Not much fun.

Let’s see here. I would parcel a lot of it to the school my kids attend because I want it to stay open for a long time. Well it can close in 2019 when my youngest kid graduates from eight grade. (Head explodes into a million tiny pieces as she realizes she’ll be 51 when her youngest kid finishes eight grade.)

So they’re getting $300,000.

As you may know, our local Catholic churches are struggling and some of them are being closed down and merged. I don’t like change. If we’re
merging,
I want
our church to
be the
mother ship.

I want things to run the same for me. Yep, that’s selfish but if I have a million bucks to distribute the way I want, I’m keeping my church, gingah.

They get $300,000 so I can keep change from disrupting my world.

I only have $400,000 left so Gilda’s Club is getting $200,000.

That clubhouse was absolutely vital for me to get through having cancer. If I weren’t so attached to my church I’d give them more. But right now I want my church.

Hmm, down to $200,000 already.

I can think of five friends I’d add to the mix. So they all get $40,000. I think they’d be pretty happy with an anonymous windfall of 40 grand.

But if I was chatting with one of them and she said, “It was great that I got $40,000 out of the blue but I wish it were more,” I would be really pissed off. Just being honest here.

So who’s on your list?

My Church would get some – I think they could do wonders with it lol.

St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger, Marie Curie Cancer Care or Cancer Research UK – they do amazing things. St Johns is a hospice for people who have cancer, Marie Curie help people with cancer who are sick but not so sick that they need the be in a hospice and Cancer Research UK – because they support people who are working on finding a cure :)

This might take a lot of planning and forethought. I would want to do the largest amount of good and make the most impact possible. I don’t think I would want to target any big organizations that have their own fundraisers and such. I would try to locate those who can’t help themselves and see what I could do.
And then after all that I might help my parents out. They are going to rely completely on children to support them, which I know is due to poor planning and lack of forethought, but I would still pull them up a little bit, at least debt wise.

Or, I could donate the whole thing into zero calorie beer research.

  • Oh, this IS fun. I love the idea of giving the whole lump sum to somebody. Yes, I could spread it around, but how often do you get a million bucks to bestow? I think I’d show up at my local animal shelter, holding aloft my wad of bills, and say graciously, “Golden cages for all!” Actually, I’d hope that money would allow them to hire staff and rearrange the setup so NONE of the animals had to be in cages. A nice, clean, comfortable, safe environment for my baby strays.

That would be money well spent, IMO.

Mine’s all for local causes, but I’d have to do some research. My general alliances fall with Planned Parenthoods, domestic abuse shelters and any childrens’ programs. Oh, maybe I’d visit some foster homes and later divide 10k to each home that seems to really be doing something great for their kids. Or maybe help fund a music program in one of the inner city schools. I can’t handle struggling children. Do they still have Head Start? I’d help any pre-K programs out. Or maybe that organization that helps adults with interviewing skills and business attire to help getting jobs, that’s a good one. I’m all about doing good at home. But… I like any program that sends care packages and letters to the troops so I’d probably send 10k to one of those too.

Well, my schools would have to get some – to improve the arts facilities in myriad ways. There’s also a few regional theatres/troupes that are non-profit that I have worked with, and I know they could use some money to improve facilities and draw in more patrons.

I think I’d throw some towards Habitat for Humanity, because I like what they do….

And then I’d split the remainder among all the struggling actors I know – people to whom a couple thousand bucks would really help.

i’ll give to strangers. not sure who. can i just observe peeps and then pay for their purchases or stuff money in a mailbox and watch from the bushes. uh yeah, i like that. that’s what i’m going to do. when i get the money, of course.

$500,000 to my local HS so they could have a jazz band and not just a marching band and art and other “unnecessary” courses

$500,000 to National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

  • Bumbles says:

Well, first of all, I didn’t know you are a cancer survivor. So kudos for that accomplishment. Therefore, I would give my $1 mil. to The Jimmy Fund and to Gilda’s Club – because I like to support cancer programs locally and nationally, and because I don’t like too much change either. That way we cure cancer and I get to keep all my loved ones, friends – real life and bloggers – and random strangers around who might do great things for others some day.
